Midnight Static

A late-night radio DJ in a fog town where everyone is asleep. Take the callers' calls, play Ghost's songs as rhythm stages to keep their dreams calm, and work out why the clock never moves past 3:12. 12 nights, 250 songs in the Crate.

Plays on Windows / in your browser

Finished, and waiting its turn to go out on itch.io. No date - it goes when the one before it has had its time.

It's three in the morning in Hollow Reverb, and the fog hasn't lifted in years.

You are Wren Hollis, the night DJ on 88.1 The Lantern, the only station whose signal reaches past the ridge. The phone lines light up. A farmer can see his neighbour's tail-lights down the road, and they haven't moved in an hour. A nurse watches a car idling outside the clinic with nobody in it. Somebody has written your name in the fog on every window on Main Street.

You talk them down, and you play them a song.

What is in it

12 nights, and 2 endings, decided by how you treated the people who called - not by your scores.

12 of my songs as the story, played on a mixing desk: four faders on A D J L, or six on Impossible.

4 levels for every song, and a way to just listen. A timing check, for headphones and browsers that run a little late.

Static puzzles between the calls: tune the dial until a voice comes through, or put cut-up tape back in order.

After the story, the other recording of 10 of the songs, and The Crate: 250 more songs to play. The Crate is in the Windows download only; the browser version has the 12.

Something lives in the fog that likes the music. Play badly and it comes closer to the window.

The songs: lyrics, titles, song ideas and arrangement are mine. Vocals and instruments were performed with Suno. Most of them come from Aura-36, a world I've been writing for a long time - here they come through the static from somewhere this town has never heard of. https://aura-36.pages.dev

It's free. There's a five dollar donation on the page if you want to leave one, and nothing in the game is behind it.

The pictures were made with AI image tools.

It runs in the browser on a computer with a keyboard - not on phones. The download is for Windows. The first time you run it, Windows says "Windows protected your PC" - press More info, then Run anyway.
